Craig Armstrong first worked alongside Michael Boyd when he was artistic director of the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. With the Royal Shakespeare Company, Armstrong provided music for two plays – the first of which was John Ford’s celebrated Jacobean drama The Broken Heart, staged by the RSC in 1994.
The play follows tragic Spartan heroine Penthea as she struggles to free herself from a marriage that had been arranged to make peace between warring factions. This production, starring Emma Fielding as Penthea and Iain Glen as Orgius, was celebrated as a ‘lucid production of a distinct masterpiece’ (The Times).
